1.  Our apartment

Our apartment is primarily a summer holiday residence on the Mediterranean coast of France., It is 200 metres from the beach - 350 metres to the water's edge!

It sleeps up to 6 persons and is situated in a large apartment complex of 8, three or four storey buildings. The buildings are set in about 4 hectares of well tended gardens with a central swimming pool and a tennis court in one corner. In total there are over 300 apartments in the complex. The buildings were designed by a Spanish architect and constructed in the 1960s.

2.  Where is Our place in Argelès?

"Our place in Argelès" is in the Mediteranean beach resort of Argelès-Plage, which is about 12 miles south-south-east of Perpignan and just six miles north of the Spanish border.  The Apartment location option in the left menu opens a gallery of images that 'Zoom in' from an overview map of South West Europe down to an aerial view of our apartment complex.

Argelès-Plage, and Argelès-Port are two coastal satellites of the main town of Argelès-sur-Mer, which dates back to medieval times. At some point in its history, Argelès-sur-Mer (Argelès-on-sea) must have been on the coast but these days it is 2 miles inland from the coast.

Argelès-sur-Mer is widely known as the camping capital of France (if not Europe) with over fifty 2, 3 or 4-star campsites within a 5 kilometre radius of the town. These are all very well hidden under pine trees as can (not) be seen on aerial photographs. For example, look at this picture it includes 16 campsites!

In about 1860, an enterprising Frenchman planted a pine wood where the centre of Argelès-Plage now stands and since that time it has gradually became a popular camping place for outdoor enthusiasts. The first villas, built in the early 1900s, were individually designed and occupy prime beach-side locations in the southern part of Argelès-Plage. By today's standards they are very large. In the 1960s, the French government decided to develop the coastline south of Narbonne for tourism.

In high-season (July & August) it is very hot and extremely busy in this area as the population expands from 10,000 to as much as 100,000. But six weeks either side of the main season it is relatively quiet and as warm as a good English summer.

Argelès-Plage, unlike some beach resorts, is open all year round - it does not turn into a ghost town out of season.
